Unai Emery reveals Aston Villa tactics for victory over Manchester United

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery spoke about his tactics as his side saw off Manchester United in the Premier League.

Emery is enjoying the best possible start as Villa boss, coming out with a comfortable 3-1 win at home against the Red Devils on Sunday.

The Spaniard helped to end the club’s 27-year hoodoo at Villa Park against United.

“Maybe I was dreaming,” Emery said post-game, per Birmingham Live.

“Today I am so happy. The atmosphere was amazing with the supporters.

“We have players with energy. We have players with good skills and we wanted to be united, to be disciplined and, being together with our game plan, the players did it. It was a special day.

“My challenge here is to be consistent. Today was so important to win given we haven’t beat them here in a long time. The positive energy from the supporters is necessary for the players. It was all perfect. I have passion and I have to stay calm myself and I will tell the players on Tuesday, ‘We have only made the first step’. We did it but now we must keep consistent.”

He added: “We were speaking about the game plan and I think the players did it perfectly. It was about going against them! I tried to keep the possession, tried to break their high pressing and to get out midfielders, Buendia and Ramsey, and then attack with Bailey and Watkins on their last defence.

“The players played in their position and I wanted everybody to feel good playing with their characteristics. The shape, for me, is not so important. We tried to use the spaces where Manchester United let us do our job.

“We know the players have pace, rhythm, energy, skill. The same with (John) McGinn, Danny Ings, they play a lot of matches with the same idea with the players with the energy and the pace we want but, today, I decided to play with those players and they were thinking and showing desire from the first minute to 90 minutes.”
