Sunshine Stars stopper Mustapha Lawal is bidding to break into his country’s international set-up. The gloveman kept his sixth clean sheet as the Owena Whales beat Lobi Stars 3-0 in the Nigeria Professional Football League thanks to a brace from Samson Olasupo and a goal from Leonard Ugochukwu.
Lawal, nicknamed ‘Black Spider’ by Sunshine Stars fans, has been outstanding since joining the club from EFCC FC and has conceded just three goals in 8 outings for his club so far.
His sixth clean sheet in eight league matches, a record of cleansheets for a Sunshine Stars goalkeeper in his first season in less than 10 matches, has seen his side ascend to fifth position in the table.
Lawal told Lodgexpress.com: “The saves I pulled out at halftime were very important because if they had scored then we would have struggled to get an equalizer, it would have been a very difficult first 20 minutes and would have been very tough, so I’m very delighted I saved those shots and we got comfortably through the opening 20 minutes.
“I’m very glad that we’ve recorded yet another clean sheet and hopefully we can continue with that.
“I am not letting the praises from the fans to get over me, we still have lots of games to play and I want to keep as many clean sheets as possible and hopefully get a chance to represent my country in the nearest future.
“We have game on Wednesday and I must play well through these games and help my team finish in top four.”
