Sunshine Stars goalkeeper Mustapha Lawal was thrilled with his fifth cleansheet yesterday against reigning Nigeria league champions, Akwa United.
Lawal kept a cleansheet for the 0-0 draw in matchday 8 in Uyo, which saw Sunshine Stars climb to 10th position on the log after seven games.
“Obviously that’s the aim for every goalkeeper in the world,” Lawal told Lodgexpress. “That’s the dream right from when you play as a kid, till you grow to become a regular and it’s just part of the stepping stones, but there’s a lot more hard work and I’ve got a lot more to do to make the next step.
“This was obviously a big occasion for me. To play in the Nigeria Professional Football League and keep a cleansheet against top teams in the division, I must say it is a big step in my career, but the lads made it easy in front of me, they defended well and it was good test because Akwa United are a good side, but it’s about building on that now.
“It’s really vital that we keep on getting points away from home and with the other results going our way, we’ve got to finish the job and most importantly, finish in the top four.”
Since making his debut in the league this season in their 1-0 away loss to Abia Warriors, Lawal who joined Sunshine Stars this summer from Division two side, EFCC FC, has now kept a cleansheet against top four teams in the division such as Rangers International, Kano Pillars, Rivers United and Akwa United.
