Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said it’s going to be tough to find a centre-half signing before transfer deadline day on Monday.
It is known that Liverpool’s wide-ranging search saw them make contact with lots of clubs, including RB Leipzig, with an initial inquiry about Dayot Upamecano, and then firm interest in highly-rated young French centre back Ibrahima Konate.
Jurgen Klopp though, is under no illusions at the size of the transfer task.
“You know the situation with centre-halves out there,” he said.
“You know the clubs where the centre-halves are playing, because everyone is talking about them. Tell me if one of these clubs needs the money and needs to sell a player?
“And if they need money then they want crazy money. I am not sure there is an £80million centre-back available at the moment and a club thinks ‘We can get £80m for him so we will sell him’.
“The teams would not sell this calibre of player now.”
Klopp disclosed he is amazed that the fans believe it simple to go out and instantly sign up a defender good enough to play for the Reds.
“That’s not how it works – we can not go out and say (to rivals) ‘are you ready to sort out our problem?'”, he said.
But he has also reassured the worrying Liverpool supporters that the transfer team spend every waking hour working on the problem, adding: “If we don’t sleep, we work. That’s what we did all the time. So we will try and we will see.
“In an ideal world, it would be that the short term solution is the long term solution as well – wow that would be great!!” he said.
“I don’t know if we can do that, but we will see…”
