Sunshine Stars defender Habib Yakub earned the Man of the Match award for his performance in their barren draw against Akwa United on Sunday.
The highly-rated right-back, who captained the team, was visitors’ biggest threat down the right flank, with his passing and footwork constantly irking keeping Evans Iyebi on high alert.
He made one of his magnificent passes with the outside of his boot, but sadly he couldn’t get an assist to his name as he has been recently. His passing was superb, always seeking to open up spaces, and he was aggressive defensively.
Habib said it was very important for he and his teammates to quell the attacking threat of Akwa United especially with Ubong Friday and Steven Chukwude leading the attack and was delighted to have done his job for his coach Deji Ayeni.
“It was good,” Habib told Lodgexpress.com. “It was a tough day out obviously playing against one of the top teams in the division as well as the defending champions.
“It was just ensuring we were doing everything possible to limit their opportunities. They’ve got lots of quality players. If we were going to make them struggle all through the game then it was really vital that we shut them down early and frustrate them, I think the strategy paid off handsomely. I’ll say it was an all around great team effort.”
Habib and Sunshine Stars will now return to base to play host to Lobi Stars in League nine fixture on Sunday.
He has so far gotten two assists to his name in all of his four appearances so far this season and has been the architect in 90% of Sunshine Stars’s wins so far.
