Akwa United captain Ubong Friday feels victory over Niger Tornadoes can now launch their season.
The league’s reigning champions recorded their first win away from the Nest of Champions after ten months, thanks to a 68th minutes winner from super substitute, Leo Ezekiel.
“Given the players and the manager we’ve got, we ought to be playing better than we are, with more points,” the skipper told Lodgexpress.com after the game.
“But at the moment I believe we have a good base now and with our victory away from home, we can return to the Nest of Champions and build on that.
“All we did in Abuja was to show a lot of character, we did play very well and deserved the victory.
“We have more home games coming up, and we need all the points we can grab, after which we can have a look at where we are in the table.”
Quizzed whether a place in the top four was a realistic target, Friday replied: “It is always a minimum for this club.”
As it stands, United are 7th on the log with 14 points from 9 matches played. They will now jet back to Uyo to welcome Kwara United in matchday 10 on Wednesday.
