Nweke Kalu expressed delight over Abia Warriors’ 2-1 win over Sunshine Stars on Sunday.
The skipper had a superb outing in front his home supporters as Abia Warriors recorded their second victory of the second round after striker Adejoh Ojonugwa came off the bench to net a quick fire double in two minutes.
Abia Warriors’ victory saw them move into the fourth position with just a point adrift of third placed Doma United in Group B of the NPFL table, prompting Kalu to indicate that the Umuahia outfit are capable of matching finishing in the top three spot with just four games left to play.
“It’s massive,” he told Lodgexpress.com.
“Sunday’s victory was a big statement for us. We know what we were capable of and we knew there were going to be chances if we stuck to the game plan and when they came along we grabbed them.
“I don’t think there’s any denying they [Sunshine Stars] are a brilliant football team and they do like to play the ball. We knew that if we got in their faces and kept working hard that we’d crea te chances.
“They’re a great team in the division and we’re just three points but I think we showed what we were capable of, especially in the last couple of minutes.”
The victory comes at the perfect time ahead of the very important fixture against Niger Tornadoes and Nweke Kalu reacted on the importance of such a result, which has Abia Warriors needing to avoid a defeat at Kaduna if they’re to keep their top three hopes alive.
“Nobody wants to lose any game at this point in time so it was massive for us and it was important we keep going, keep fighting and just focus on the next game,” he added.
