Sporting Lagos versatile center-back, Patrick Egeonu, showcased his leadership and defensive prowess during their recent clash with Akwa United. The match, played on Sunday, marked Sporting Lagos’ first-ever away game in the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) after their promotion from the Nigerian National League.
Egeonu, who was appointed as the team’s captain for the game, played a pivotal role in securing a hard-fought 0-0 draw. His performance at the heart of the defense was nothing short of outstanding as he marshaled his backline effectively, frustrating Akwa United’s attacking efforts.

In his words, “It was a challenging game, and we knew that facing Akwa United in our first away match in the NPFL would be tough. I’m proud of my teammates for their commitment and the way we defended as a unit. Keeping a clean sheet against a strong side like Akwa United is a positive result.
“We are a newly promoted team, and our goal is to prove ourselves in the topflight division. We need to continue working hard and improving as a team. The draw today is a good start, but we have a long journey ahead.”
