The biggest stars in Nigeria topflight league are set to return to action in what is promising to be another action-packed and exciting season. To celebrate, we’ve decided to take a look at one player who could make an impressive mark across the 2023 campaign for his club.
David Sholumade Boluwaji (Akwa United): Defender
David Boluwaji is a Nigerian professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for NPFL club, Akwa United.
Boluwaji is a tactically versatile, tall, and physically strong and imposing centre-back, who is good in the air, both offensively and defensively. He switched over to Akwa United from Sunshine Stars and enjoyed partnership with Samson Gbadebo where he also earned his first international call up to the Nigeria youth team.
The center-back is known in particular for his gameplay intelligence, anticipation, and marking ability, as well as his notable pace and mobility. He is also considered by many to be a clinical player, who often avoids committing to challenges, rather preferring to restrict his opponents through his well-timed positioning.
As a result of his confidence in possession, Boluwaji is capable of driving the ball out from the back-line before launching a quick counter all thanks to his long pass ability.
He was a member of the Nigeria youth team that won the WAFU B tournament in Niger Republic last year where he played the entire games as a starter.
Going into the new NPFL season, Boluwaji has been reunited with his former Sunshine Stars defensive pair, Anthony Anioke who joined the Promise Keepers during the transfer window following the exit of Samson Gbadebo.
