There will not be shortage of potential and also quality once again in the 2023 Nigeria Professional Football League season.

Anthony Anioke (Akwa United): Defender
Normally a centre-back, Anthony Anioke is a very versatile defender, who is also capable of playing as a full-back on either flank. He has been described by Lodgexpress as a “… strong, fast and athletic center-back who is … comfortable having the ball at his feet”.

He is also touted as an “interesting talent” who “…has been gifted with all the necessary physical attributes to become a world-class centre-back.” His profile at his ex club, Sunshine Stars also describes him as a “tough tackler” and a “commanding figure during aerial duels.” To add to his strong physical attributes and aggressive style of play, Anioke is also known for his leadership qualities and passing ability.
He was outstanding for his former employers last season, helping the Owena Whales to finish 11th on the table; a team that narrowly survived relegation the season before his arrival.
He has now linked up with his former Sunshine Stars manager, Deji Ayeni at Akwa United and will be reuniting also with fellow defender David Boluwaji; one center-back he arrived together at Sunshine Stars sequel to the start of last season and enjoyed amazing partnership.
