Enyimba Football Club center-back James Abel was delighted to score on his debut on Sunday.
The defender featured in the entire duration after being named in the starting lineup by coach Finidi George for the first time since he joined at the start of the season from FC Ifeanyi Ubah.
Abel paired alongside fellow new signing, Pascal Ezeh, and was the hero as Enyimba secured all three points to move up to 7th on the table.
He was sturdy in defence against a Wikki Tourists side that has the likes of Sunday Abubakar, Promise Damala and Manu Garba while also scoring the opener of the game with a cool finish from close range.
Abel, one of NPFL’s best centre backs, has the ability to help guide the Enyimba to this season’s continental finish.
He told Lodgexpress during a post-game presser;
“I’m really pleased to have had my chance to come in and make my first appearance,” he said. “What makes it even special is that we got the three points, and it’s good that the team won.
“To me, the entire team played fantastic football all through the game and was a very dominant performance overall.
“The goal, my first for the club is just a plus for me. I’m really pleased, and I hope to just continue like this and to keep scoring goals. It was a great feeling. It always is to score a goal. I know that and I’m hoping for more to come.
“This victory was a game where the manager told me to go and make an impact. I feel like that’s what I did, I tried my best in the few minutes that I got a goal.
“But what is more important is that it was a very good team performance, so I’m really happy for that, and the goal was just an icing on the cake.”
