President Muhammadu Buhari’s nomination of his aide, Lauretta Onochie as a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been knocked back by the Senate.

The decision to reject her nomination was reached on Tuesday July 13 as the senate resumed its plenary. It came after a report by the senate committee on INEC, in which it was said that her nomination breached federal character principle.

Kabir Gaya, chairman of the Committee, who cited Section 14 (1) 3 of the constitution, pointed out that someone from her zone is already a commissioner.
