Akwa United beat struggling visitors, Football Club Ifeanyi Ubah 1-Nil at home in NPFL Matchday 16 tie to occupy the fifth position on the log.
Nigeria striker, Ndifreke Effiong opened the scoring for the home side in the 20th minutes after lashing to the far corner of the net from the penalty spot.
FC Ifeanyi Ubah where however relentless in pushing for the equalizer, but all efforts ended in a futile as they were unable to prevent a defeat which extended their winless streak on the road to seven so far this season, losing five and drawing twice.
The victory tightens Akwa United’s hold on the fifth spot as they moved to 26 points, just a goal difference adrift 6th placed Rivers United and two points from 7th placed Enyimba International who boast of four outstanding matches as a result of continental involvement.
Also, it was the Covid-19 restriction protocol that prevented the home fans from trooping in to watch the highly entertaining clash in the NPFL but that didn’t deter the lots of passionate home team supporters who were visibly present on ground to give their side a noisy reception when they arrived at the stadium.
Akwa United had a penalty call awarded in the first half after skipper, Ubong Friday, got mauled inside the 18-yard box by a rushing FC Ifeanyi Ubah defender, Tochukwu Anuenyiagu in the 20th minutes.
Ndifreke Effiong then stepped up and calmly converted the chance in what would go on to be the match decider.
FC Ifeanyi Ubah now welcome Jigawa Golden Stars at home in Nnewi in Matchday 17.
